1. Explanation

 : '-기로 하다.' is an expression that indicates plans or decision. It's attached after verbs. And it indicates planning or deciding to do something. Or it is also used when making a proposal or promise to someone, or when talking about one's own determination or decision. Plus in case of determination or decision, even it indicates the future event, you should use past tense in this expression. Let's look at examples.

 

 * Spoken language

   1) Polite - A verb stem '-기로 해요.' 

   2) Past tense - A verb steam + '-기로 했어요.'

2. Examples

 너무 더워서 콘서트를 취소하기로 했어요. (It's too hot, so we decided to cancel the concert.) 

 *취소하다 to cancel

  1) A verb stem is '취소하-'

  2) It conjugates with '-기로 하다.'

  3) 취소하기로 하다.

  4) Make it as a past tense

  5) '-하다.' changes to '-했어요.'

  6) 취소하기로 했어요.

 

 피곤해서 오늘 하루는 쉬기로 했어요. (I'm tired, so I decide to take the day off today.) 

 *쉬다 to take the day off

  1) A verb stem is '쉬-'

  2) It conjugates with '-기로 하다.'

  3) 쉬기로 하다.

  4) Make it as a past tense

  5) '-하다.' changes to '-했어요.'

  6) 쉬기로 했어요.

 

 30분 뒤에 함께 사무실을 청소하기로 했어요. (We decided to clean the office together in 30 minutes.) 

 *청소하다 to clean

  2) It conjugates with '-기로 하다.'
