1. Explanation

 : '-고 말다.' is expression that something finally happend or ahcieved something at the end. You can use this expression that indicates something eventually happend. And when you feel disappointed or satisfied as things progress differently than expected. Or you can express that achieve something through hard work by using this. You can add particle '-겠-' between '말-' and '-다.' for indicating strong detemination to achieve something. This expression can be conjugates with verbs. Also don't need to care about ending of verb stem. You can always conjugate this like 'Verb stem + -고 말다.' Let's look at examples.

 

2. Examples

 열심히 공부했지만, 시험에 떨어지고 말았어요. (Despite studying hard, I ended up failing the exam.) 

 *떨어지다 to fail

  1) A verb stem is '떨어지-'

  2) It conjugates with '-고 말다.'

  3) 떨어지고 말다.

  4) Make it as a past tense

   4-1) '말-' has a vowel 'ㅏ'

   4-2) It conjugates with '-았어요.'

  5) 떨어지고 말았어요.

 

 드라마를 보다가 지각을 하고 말았어요. (While watching a drama, I ended up being late.) 

 *지각을 하다 to be late 

  1) A verb stem is '지각하-'

  2) It conjugates with '-고 말다.'

  3) 지각하고 말다.

   4-1) '말-' has a vowel 'ㅏ'

   4-2) It conjugates with '-았어요.'
