Korean grammar '못/-지 못하다.'

 

1. Explanation

 : '못/-지 못하다.' makes a negative sentence. You can add '못' in front of a verb. And there is a space between '못' and the verb. However, you can conjugate '-지 못하다' with a verb stem. Additionally, '못 하다' can be changed to '못 해요.' by using the ending particle '-해요.' One more thing, '못하다' can be used to the opposite meaning of '잘하다(= be good at)'. In that case, it would be better to translate it as 'be poor at' and there is no space between '못' and '하다'(=못하다). This grammar is similar to 'Korean grammar #7 안/-지 않다.' However there is a significant difference betweent them. 1) '안/-지 않다.' is translated as 'don't', but 2) '못/-지 못하다.' is translated as 'can't'.

  * Different conjugation of 'Noun+하다.' 

   1) Regular : 하다 => 못 하다 => 못 해요.

   2) Irregular : 생각하다 => 못 생각하다. => 못 생각해요. (X)

                    생각하다 => 생각 못 하다. => 생각 못 해요. (O)
