Korean grammar '-ㄹ까요?/을까요?'

1. Explanation

 : '-ㄹ까요?/을까요?' is used to ask for someone's opinion. And this particle also includes meaning of suggestion. So you can translate it as 'shall we/I -'. It is attached after a verb stem, and you should choose between '-ㄹ까요?' and '-을까요?' depending on the verb stem's form. '-ㄹ까요?' conjugates with vowel ending verbs and consonant 'ㄹ' ending verbs. However '-을까요?' conjugates with consonant ending verbs. It's more helpful to study this grammar with questions and answers. Let's look at the example together.

 같이 산책할까요? (Shall we go for a walk?)

 네. 좋아요. (Sure, sounds good.)

 *산책하다 to go for a walk 

  1) A verb stem is '산책하-'

  2) It ends with a vowel 'ㅏ'

  3) It conjugates with '-ㄹ까요?'

  4) 산책할까요?

 

 내일 제주도 갈까요? (Shall we go to Jeju Island tomorrow?)

 그래요. (Okay.)

 *가다 to go 

  1) A verb stem is '가-'

  2) It ends with a vowel 'ㅏ'

  3) It conjugates with '-ㄹ까요?'

  4) 갈까요?

 

 이따 커피 마실까요? (Shall we grab a coffe later?)

 아니요. 아까 마셨어요. (No, I had it before.)

 *마시다 to drink 

  1) A verb stem is '마시-'

  2) It ends with a vowel 'ㅣ'

  2) It ens with a consonant 'ㄵ'

  3) It conjugates with '-을까요?'

 *먹다 to eat 

  1) A verb stem is '먹-'

  2) It ends with a consonant 'ㄱ'

  3) It conjugates with '-을까요?'

 *많다 a lot of
