1. Explanation

 : '-는 것' is an ending particle that changes verbs into nouns. So, it allows the conjugated form to function as a noun in a sentence. Therefore it can be used as a subject, object or modifier like a noun. And it indicates certain actions, facts or things that related to actions. It is attached after verbs, '있다.', '없다.' And it can conjugate with every forms of words. You should be careful when the verb stem ends with 'ㄹ' consonant. In this case, you should drop that 'ㄹ' consonant before conjugation. Let's look at examples.

 

2. Examples

 배우는 것은 저의 큰 즐거움이에요. (Learning is a great joy for me.) 

 *배우다 to learn

  1) A verb stem is '배우-'

  2) It conjugates with '-는 것'

  3) 배우는 것

 

 소중한 사람을 위해 요리하는 것을 좋아해요. (I enjoy cooking for my loved ones.) 

 *요리하다 to cook

  1) A verb stem is '요리하-'

  2) It conjugates with '-는 것'

  3) 요리하는 것

 

 많은 사람들 앞에서 말하는 것은 긴장되는 일이에요. (Speaking in front of many people makes me nervous.) 

 *말하다 to speak

  1) A verb stem is '말하-'

  2) It conjugates with '-는 것'

  3) 말하는 것

 

 이야기하는 것보다 듣는 것을 선호해요. (I prefer listening to talking.) 

 *듣다 to listen

  1) A verb stem is '듣-'

  2) It conjugates with '-는 것'

  3) 듣는 것

 

 크리스마스에 식당을 예약하는 것은 정말 어렵네요. (Reserving a restaurant on Christmas is really difficult.)

 *예약하다 to reserve

  1) A verb stem is '예약하-'

  2) It conjugates with '-는 것'

  3) 예약하는 것

 

 사람들이 우산을 쓰는 것을 보니까 비가 오나 봐요. (Seeing people putting up umbrellas makes me think it must be raining.)

 *쓰다 to put up

  1) A verb stem is '쓰-'

  2) It conjugates with '-는 것'

  3) 쓰는 것

 

 아는 것은 힘이다. (Knowledge is power.)

 *알다 to know

  1) A verb stem is '알-'

  2) It ends with a consonant 'ㄹ'

  3) A consonant 'ㄹ' can be dropped => '아-'

  4) It conjugates with '-는 것'

  5) 아는 것

 

 김밥을 마는 것은 기술이 필요해요. (Making gimbap requires skill.)

 *(김밥을) 말다 to make (gimbap)

  1) A verb stem is '말-'

  2) It ends with a consonant 'ㄹ'

  3) A consonant 'ㄹ' can be dropped => '마-'

  4) It conjugates with '-는 것'

  5) 마는 것
