1. Explanation

 : '-ㄴ/은 적이 있다.' is an expression that indicates the past experience. It indicates that an action took place in the past. So, It is used when talking about past events or experiences. It is attached after verbs. '-ㄴ 적이 있다.' conjugates with vowel ending verbs or consonant 'ㄹ' ending verbs. However '-은 적이 있다.' conjugates with consonant ending verbs. One more thing native Koreans also use '- 본 적이 있다.' as well. It means the same. So you can interchange both expressions. Let's look at examples.

 

 * Spoken language

   Polite - '있-' conjugates with '-어요.' => '있어요.'

    '-ㄴ/은 적이 있어요.'

    '- 본 적이 있어요.'

    (A verb stem + -아/어/여 보다 = emphasize experience

    => '보-' ends with vowel => '-ㄴ 적이 있다.' => 본 적이 있다.)
